The Official Unofficial Version:
I was born and raised in San Francisco.  When I was ten years old, Mayor
George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were brutally assassinated in City Hall.
Supervisor Dianne Feinstein (now U.S. Senator) discovered Harvey Milk's  body moments
after the shooting, and led the city through its shock and grief as Moscone's replacement.
Her courage and strength left a lasting impact on me- and I believe that's when Zella Brooks
(
Thief's main character) was born.
The actual story featuring a strong, female President percolated for another ten years
while the content and context for Zella's book seeped in from life experiences.  I spent
countless hours peering at dim, declassified U.S. Government microfilm in one of USC's
libraries, learning about Bio Weapons experiments and how the then-fledgling satellite
program would best be presented to the public.  I took global peace and conflict resolution
classes, pledged undying loyalty to the Illustrious House of G.D.I., went barefoot for a year,
and managed to fit in some time to study English literature and fiction writing.

The writing of Thief was more a process of connecting the dots than dreaming up a
story (for more on this, see
Thief History)
I'm currently working on the sequel, waist deep in research and following a twisting
trail that leads to a nail-biting scenario.  I honestly don't know how Zella and Earl are going
to survive.  Each day the story unfolds is an adventure for all of us.

Personally, I'm learning the juggling act of work, motherhood, wife-hood, ranch chores,
and young horse/natural horse+man=ship training,
and speaking, teaching and media gigs,
some days with more success than others.  Fortunately, my husband and daughter are
loving and patient.  Most of the time.
I'm active in local politics, an occasional ghost buster, and psychic investigator.  Although I
mainly utilize those abilities in research and writing, I did work with the California
Department of Forestry on a case that resulted in the arrest of the most prolific arsonist in
California's history.
I have very strong opinions about disaster relief and government assistance during
natural disasters (or the lack thereof), having personally driven through flames with my
toddler during the devastating
Cedar Fire that killed 19 people.

Seriously folks, the Homeland Security/ FEMA beast must be slain, and soon.  Katrina
victims are a fine example of why we, as a nation, should rethink our natural disaster
plans...to say nothing of what happened AGAIN during and after October 2007's Southern
California Firestorms.
